Visa Categories

Visa issue for Mongolia is managed by the Ministry of Justice and Home Affairs through the Office of Immigration, Naturalisation and Foreign Citizens (OINFC). Visa issue outside Mongolia is managed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs through its Embassies, Consulates and some Honorary Consulates.

The Honorary Consulate-General is authorised to issue single-entry 30-day entry-exit visas for Tourists (J), Business (B), Transit (T) and Official visitors (A).

Long-stay visa categories, such as for employees (HG), for working with NGOs (O), long-stay family of those working in Mongolia (H) and long-term students (S) must be arranged in advance with the OINFC. The Consulate-General in Sydney can assist in how to contact the OINFC to make arrangements for these visa categories.

The visas are valid for 90 days from the date of issue and you can enter Mongolia at any time up to the last date on the visa. The 90 day period does not need to cover the whole time in country, so long as you have entered before the last date shown on the visa.

Tourist, Business, Transit and Official Visas

 
Applications for a Tourist Visa (Category J) must be accompanied by at least one of: (i) a copy of the applicant’s travel itinerary; (ii) if on an organised tour, a copy of a letter from the tour organising company indicating the dates of the tour; or (iii) if the applicant has not yet finalised travel arrangements, a letter indicating when the applicant will arrive and depart from Mongolia and the mode of travel.

A double-entry tourist visa is also available, but only where the traveller is making a side trip from Mongolia and returning within a short time. The double-entry visa cannot be used to make two separate trips to Mongolia. Transit visas are for train travellers only and you cannot leave the train while in Mongolia.

Applications for a Business Visa (Category B) should be accompanied by a letter of invitation from the person or company with whom the applicant will be working in Mongolia and a copy of the applicant’s travel itinerary.

Officialvisas (Category O or A) are issued to persons travelling on official government passports.

Multiple-entry Visas

Multiple entry visas are available for Business or Work visas. Multiple-entry visas can only be obtained from a Mongolian Embassy, such as in Beijing, or from the Office for Immigration, Naturalisation and Foreign Citizens (OINFC) in Ulaanbaatar. These are issued to people who have work-related reasons to regularly travel to and from Mongolia. When applying for a multiple-entry visa the applicant should have a letter of support from the company or individual in Mongolia with whom they are regularly working.

Long-stay or Work Visas, Student Visas

Long-stay or work visas (Category HG) are issued by arrangement with the Office for Immigration, Naturalisation and Foreign Citizens (OINFC) in Ulaanbaatar, or from a Mongolian Embassy. The Consulate-General is Sydney can assist with contacting the OINFC. Once arrangements are made for the visa, the OINFC will notify the Consulate in Sydney who will issue a 30-day visa of the appropriate category, which will then be extended for the agreed period after the visa holder has arrived in Mongolia. The same arrangements apply for the issue of visas to spouse and children (Category H) of persons working in Mongolia on long-stay arrangements.

Student visas (Category S) must be arranged in advance with the OINFC by the university or other institution with whom the applicant will be studying. As with an HG visa, when arrangements are complete, the OINFC will notify the Consulate in Sydney to issue a 30-day student visa which will be extended for the appropriate duration when the applicant has commenced the course of study.

Visa on Arrival

Single-entry visas are available on arrival at Chinggis Khan (Ulaanbaatar) Airport only. The cost is US$50 plus service fee of US$3. They are available as a service for travellers who cannot normally obtain a visa at their starting point or who are travelling at short notice. They are not available for train travellers, who must have a valid visa before arrival at the border. The OINFC has requested that travellers who wish to obtain a visa on arrival notify the Consulate-General in Sydney by email in advance of their travel: (i) their full name; (ii) date of birth, (iii) citizenship; (iv) passport number and (v) expiry date, together with the date of arrival and flight number. The Consulate will then forward this information to the OINFC and confirm with the applicant.

2. Applicant’s passport. Must be valid for at least six months;

3. One passport-sized photograph;

5. Applications for a Tourist visa must be accompanied by either a copy of the travel itinerary showing arrival and departure dates; a copy of the letter from the tour company if on an organised tour, or a covering letter explaining the travel arrangements and intended dates of arrival in, and departure from, Mongolia.

6. Applications for a Business visa must be accompanied by a letter of invitation from the hosting company or individual, together with a copy of the travel itinerary showing arrival and departure dates; and

7. A self-addressed Express Post envelope for the return of the passport, or $5 for return Express Post postage within Australia. Overseas applicants (particularly New Zealand) can send an additional Aus$10 for return of the passport by International Express Post.

Applications should be sent to PO Box 1731, North Sydney, NSW 2060. Applications will normally be processed and returned within 7 to 10 days. Urgent applications can generally be processed within 48 hours. An additional urgent charge of $35 per visa request applies.

Payment can be made by money order, bank cheque or cash. Cheques from registered travel agents are accepted, but personal cheques or credit cards are not accepted. Money orders or cheques should be made payable to Mongolian Consulate-General. All payments must be in Australian currency.

VISA EXTENSION

Extension of visas can be arranged in Ulaanbaatar with the OINFC. Travellers who are aware that their time in Mongolia will exceed 30 days should arrange visa extension as early as possible during their stay. (See page Visa Extension).

We are authorised to issue a single-entry visas.

  • Visas are valid for up to 30 days in Mongolia.
  • Visas are valid for 90 days from date of issue. You must enter Mongolia before the last date shown, after which you get 30 days in Mongolia.
  • Single-entry visas are also available at the airport on arrival at a cost of US$50.

However, if travelling by train you must have a visa before you arrive at the border.
