Extending your visa in Mongolia
Visa extension can be arranged at the Office for Immigration, Naturalisation and Foreign Citizens (OINFC). It need not be a complicated operation if you think ahead.
If you are travelling to Mongolia on a Tourist visa (J) and know in advance that you will be staying for longer than 30 days, but not more than 60 days, you should enter on a 30-day visa and soon after your arrival go to the OINFC with a letter explaining your reasons for staying beyond 30 days and have your visa extended. If you expect to be staying between 60 to 90 days on a tourist visa, you should consult the Consulate-General in advance for advice as to what to do.
If you expect to apply for a visa extension, make sure you have the correct visa category in the first instance. The OINFC will not generally change visa categories when extending a visa. If you have arrived in Mongolia on a Tourist visa (J) and say, which to change to a work visa (HG), you may be required to leave the country and re-enter on the correct visa category. It will assist the issue of the correct category of visa in the first place if you advise the issuing Embassy or Consulate that you intend to apply for the visa extension on arrival in Mongolia.
The OINFC is at 11 Chinggis Ave, Sukhbaatar district, Ulaanbaatar, tel: 11-313616; and 11-312737; fax: 11-313259; email: gihaea@mongolnet.mn; website: www.mngimmigration.mn. Office hours are 09:00-13:00 14:00-17:00 Monday to Friday, except Wednesday afternoon.
The Office is located in the Department of Transport Building, at the end of the left-hand corridor from the main entrance hall. The building is on the loop road which runs off Chinggis Ave, between the Bayangol Hotel and the Peace Bridge over the railway. The building is on the corner of the loop road and narny Zam St and opposite a service station.
